Can we just talk about something for a minute?
UGGs.
So, when Uggs first came on the scene back in '04, I was patently against them. Maybe it was because the first images we saw of the boot were of Kate Hudson wearing them with a mini dress and La Britney wearing them with a bikini while coming out of a gas station bathroom. High class. Then, Isaac Mizrahi talked about how ugly they were and I felt vindicated.
Maybe it's because the name UGG is the first part of UGLY. I mean, can you imagine if a clothing company named "Disgust" came out? Would you wear their clothes? Would you not be embarrassed if someone said, "Where did you get your shirt?" and you had to say, "Oh, it's a Disgust."
Maybe it's because I'm not a shoe person, I'm a clothes person. Some people are shoe people. Some are both.
Whatever the reason, my resolve remains strong against the UGG. In fact, there may have been several text missives on the UGG back and forth between me and my favorite texter.
On NYE, I went to the mall. By myself. It was great. While I was there, the UGG was EVERYWHERE. I mean, no lie, 85% of the female population was wearing UGG like things on her feet. Then I went to a NYE party and there were two people there who I consider not only cute but very in style, wearing furry boots. Now I feel like if I don't have a pair I am missing out on something phenomenal. I mean, is having a pair of boots that look like they have been cut off of Sasquatch and are not flattering AT ALL (ok, that may be a bit of an overstatement) what it's going to take for me to look like I don't live under a rock? I won't lie. I tried a pair on that day. I KNOW! For shame.....
Guys, I'm torn. I hate the furry boot and it's look but I also don't want to be a fuddy duddy. But one has to stay true to herself, yes?

To wear something you hate for the sake of "not being in" is the height of Junior High.
People rail against Crocs but folks are going to continue to wear them because they are comfortable. I have a pair of fitFlop clogs that honestly look like house slippers. In fact, Ben wanted to know why I was wearing my house shoes out one day. But they are comfortable!
So, let me ask you, if all your friends wear their Uggs and run off a cliff...
Well, maybe I wasn't as clear as I should have been. I have no intentions of wearing an UGG. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing something incredible.
One of my best friends knew of my ugg hatred and asked me if I would make fun of her if she got some. I said yes. She got two pairs for Christmas and told me I could have one...and I laughed at her.
I'm with you 100%! I thought they were kind of ugly when they first came out, but the more I see them the more I start to like them. Sister #2 received some for Christmas, and they feel really warm.
What I've been doing lately is reminding myself of the price. It usually helps. Besides, if we just wait something else will come around that we can jump on board.
Stay strong. I am also not a fan, but I'm not much a clothes OR shoe girl. I prefer sweatpants and flip flops...I'm probably qualified to say anything about anything on the subject!
You crack me up! I too am no fan, but then again, I never like new shoe trends when they first come out. I'll probably get some the season before they're gone. Then again, maybe I won't. I'd have to buy new jeans if I got them because I don't think my bootcut jeans would tuck into them.
Wow! It is hard being female.
Amen sista. I, too, find myself being torn. I always shy away from buying a pair, because I know the second I spend over $100 on a ridiculous pair of furry boots they'll go out of style. If they've been in since 2004 they're bound to be reaching the end of their popular lifespan, right? And if that's the case, you just spent $100 for other people to look at your out of style shoes and assume that you're not a shoe OR clothes girl since your entire outfit will be outdated by association with the shoes. Yes indeed - I see your dilemma....
I am not really even sure where to begin here...I guess I just have to say my UGGS arent furry....they are sweater. They are probably not the most flattering (can boots make your butt look big?)but very warm and feel oh so comfy....so, yes you can borrow them on occasion but yes, I will then make fun of how you have devoted an entire blog post on how much you hate/envy the UGG world....thats right, I said envy (you know you do- hee hee)
and I love you anyway :)
I have 2 pairs of Uggs, no fur on the outside, but in this weather, they are the only thing that keep me from freezing all day in my office....I wear them with jeans to clarify, but you have to admit, they are pretty dang soft!
I thought they were pretty UGly too at first. Then, two years ago, Keith had to go to New York for three weeks! I guess everyone there was wearing them because he brought me back a pair as my prize for being by myself with a two year old and an infant for so long.
This will be the third winter I have worn them, and they are really comfy.
So- if you want something that is non-sexy, and you can wear forever, then they are good.
Good post. :)
I love Uggs, but will never own a pair. I'm just not willing to spend that kind of money on something I'm afraid is about to go out of style. We should have jumped on that bandwagon years ago. Kind of like arbonne, I figure. I do think chunky boots and high socks can balance out the upper half of a body though.....Maybe worth it.
Ok I have a warm pair of brown boots with furry insides, but they are not uggs. I too hate the name, but in the snow and ice there was nothing better on my feet.
Thanks for the calling the girl who loves shoes!! Cause I do but do not own Uggs. I am a cheap shoe buyer and I haven't found any at Ross. :)
I don't like them at all. I think "ugg" describes them very well. They look like tall house shoes to me. I'm with ya!
I would totally wear Uggs, but won't pay $800 for a pair of shoes. 1. I think they're kind of ugly 2. They make your legs look chunky and thicker. 3. That can be good if you want to balance out your backside. 4. They are surely going out of style soon....right?
Two winters ago I bought a pair of EMU's (fake UGGs) for around $100. This is my third winter to wear them and they are starting to show it, cause I wear them ALL THE TIME. Nothing more comfy or warm. I've gotten well over my $100 worth. I started to buy a new pair last weekend but, like you, thought "how much longer can these be in style?"
My question: Would Barbie wear UGG's? If the answer is "NO" then I wouldn't either.
