Lessons learned from parenting: It is one thing to teach your child that throwing a temper tantrum will not get them what they want...at home. It is quite a different thing to teach them that lesson...in public.
For example, (and I'm just totally hypothetically speaking here...I mean I just pulled this example out of the air) if you are at a ball game being coached by the father of your child, and said child wants m&m's, you can only say no for so long while you and 50 other people (who may or may not already hate his father) watch him scream, gyrate, and throw himself on the ground kicking and screaming before you give in. Again, I'm just speaking in strict hypotheticals here. Of course.

Now I'm just hypothetically speaking here but if that kid were mine and happened to be named Jennifer or Chris or Timothy, and they pitched a fit after being told "NO" once or twice, I would take that child firmly by the upper arm and go to the car where we'd have a "discussion" which involved a little pat on the back (down low) and a promise of more if said behavior was repeated.
Hypothetically of course.
I think we all have hypothetical situations that we would give in to. Like when a child is SCREAMING at the top of their lungs in traffic because they want chocolate and you end up tossing back the ziplock baggie of Sixlets.
Reading your blog really makes me want to have children :) haha...and thanks for the lost ogle compliment--how do you know I don't already write for them? :) just joking (or am i?)
Oh, this sounds like a day at the park with my kids. I didn't notice spitting in there.
i just wanted you to know that I was finally able to figure out google reader and added you. I think we need to light a candle to pay tribute to this event.
Emily, it is so good to hear from you and to know you are in the same boat as me. We'll have to compare notes as the year goes by. I'm sorry your little girl is having a hard time. That makes it tough! Anyway, I have to say that I love reading your blog. I appreciate your honesty, and you are so funny!
